Yup. I'm holding one. Because why not? You know that I am well obsessed with something if I end up holding a contest for it.

You all know that I ship this like crazy pants, maybe more than anything else because it was such a part of my childhood that it's harder to shake off than most other things. I have been shipping this for twelve years. How sad is that?

CHECK IT OUT HERE: crispy-gypsy.tumblr.com/post/2…

So if you like the pairing, take a shot! I don't expect a lot of entries, since this is a somewhat obscure pairing, so you've probably got a decent chance.

Any questions or comments or ideas for prizes or whatever, feel free to say and I'll get back to you! Going back to work now. Thanks!

I wrote a fic for them back when it came out. Haven't thought about that in a long time though, hmmm...

Athanasia, right? (I am pretty sure I've read all the Fremarant fic that is available on the internet)

Heh, indeed! Yeah, it's a pretty small segment, so I'm not surprised. I remember babelfish-translating fic on Japanese sites just to read more of it back then; I doubt any of it's even up now, though...

There's still one site that's still up, I think. I replayed the game recently, so I went through (am going through?) a resurgence of my old OTP, and I checked. Not too much has developed since the first time I wandered through the fandom, sadly.

Though maybe that is why I am doing so much drawing/small ficlets of them, I am being a jerk and trying to squeeze out a little more.

Anyroad, Athanasia was one of my favorites when I was a kid (It is so WEIRD thinking about how that was TEN YEARS AGO), and I remember trying to do a comic of it that failed horribly because I couldn't draw back then. Thanks for writing it, anyroad. :3

Definitely liking seeing your new stuff! Especially since it's just so canon-looking and all. I liked a lot of the fanart I found then, probably still have it saved on the computer somewhere, but a lot of them did seem to have Freya as human with big ol' ears, or Amarant as way too pretty, which, well...just isn't them.

Aw, thanks :D I'm glad you liked it! I wish I had the inspiration to finish the sequel, maybe I should replay the game too :P And yeah, it really does not seem that long ago, but I guess it was.

Yeah, I think that was one of the problems with it being generally an anime fanbase, since Final Fantasy IX wanders a bit away from the typical Nomura prettiness into something dangling on the corner of cartoon. Which is why I always liked it. I don't blame them comepletely because Freya and Amarant are a bit difficult to draw when you're used to just drawing pretty humans all the time... but I was always slightly bothered with pretty!Amarant because if there's anything that Amarant isn't, it's an angsting bishounen. Or maybe I'm just a jerk that feels that Amarant's "ugliness" is a big part of his character.

Though the thought of a VincentValentine!Amarant is hilarious. I should do a "if Nomura designed FFIX" picture of of Amarant being bishie and Freya lookin like Fran or something, high heels and skimpy outfits and all.

Anyroad, yeah, Athanasia was always one of the ones I went back to as a kid (and reread a month or so ago when the game came back into my consciousness). Maybe one of these days I will do proper fan art of it. An ode to the days before I wore proper bras.

Yeah, it did have its own style to it - but that was one of the reasons I liked it, too. It was a very interesting world, even if I could think of no reason (besides A Wizard Did It) that Treno would always be in nighttime. I have good memories of playing it with my sister on breaks home from school.

That would be an awesome and hilarious picture :D High heels on Freya pretty much would have to be like Fran, wouldn't they...

I always just assumed that since Treno was shoved so hard against the side of a mountain, most of the time it's pretty well-shaded from the sunlight. Not exactly "night" but dark, and it just got that dumb nickname over the years. Or a wizard did it. I remember as a kid I was wondering how it could be that there would be a place that rained all the time, and then I found out that Burmecia is basically Ireland/Scotland, which you could tongue-in-cheek refer to as realms of eternal rain as well, so there's that.

Or a wizard did it.

I think that was my problem with the creation of Fran's race--it was written somewhere that their feet had evolved in such a way to need heels, and I started wondering how the fuck that was possible unless they were bred to be a race of stripper whores. Or they started putting tiny heels on the babies. Either that or it was hard for a designer to make a bunny race look sexy if they had proper ubergiganto anthrofeets. The world will never know.

But I never got that far in FFXII so I can't judge--that might just be how it was.

In Nomura's defense, "Fran" was designed by Akihiko Yoshida. He also designed this monstrosity.

Oh God I don't know if I'm an asshole for just being unable to look at that stuff but I am unable to look at that stuff. Something about that game rubbed me fifty different ways, and I couldn't get myself to give a shit about the characters, but again, I am probably just an asshole.

And I think I was aware of Fran's designer not being Nomura because my unknowing friend in High School leant me the FFXII art book as a "bonus" when i asked to borrow her Jak and Daxter books, but the feeling that I got from the recent art from Square is that they're all beginning to center around that design sensibility. Something about caring more about whether cosplayers would have a ball making the costume as opposed to idk actual good design. But I'm a jerk about that kind of junk.

Having seen your Daily Deviation I am interested in playing Final Fantasy IX. Unfortunately my artistic ability is limited, nor have I played the game, so I don't feel that I could write them effectively. Still, it will be interesting to see the entries.

I like the 40 Years Later pic of them you put up on Tumblr. And I'm the type of guy who's uncomfortable with the fact of aging.

I mention that here in the absence of any other appropriate place to put that comment.

Thanks!

I think I did that piece because I'm uncomfortable with the thought of aging, as well as fascinated by it. I think it kind of started with my realization that if John Lennon were alive today, he'd be 70 years old and not the long haired rebel that we all remember him for...I usually look at these characters as such young people, but then it hits me that they will (or might) have lives that extend past what we see of them, and that changes will happen to them and their world, and a lot can happen with time. Not just characters, but people in general, I guess. There's a whole life ahead of all of us. It's really scary and intriguing at the same time.

I MEAN, I WILL BE AN OLD LADY ONE OF THESE DAYS, IF HEALTH ALLOWS. How can that be?

Anyroad, I was actually writing a ficlet for that that included way too much of Amarant talking about how what small times he ever thought of the future it never extended far and that he couuld never ever think of himself as an old man. Because I like putting my own thoughts into things.

Characters aging. It's weird thinking of Luke Skywalker going to Country Kitchen Buffet to grab the early-bird deals.
